If Ever it Should Come to Pass
Orig. Words: Joseph Hart (1759)
Alt. Words: Jesse Rey Quesada. Music: Bryan Jeffrey Lee.
If ever it should come to pass
That sheep of Christ might fall away,
My fickle, feeble soul, alas!
Would fall a thousand times a day.
Thou soon would cast me far from Thee,
Were not thy Love as firm as free.
Fixed firm by Christ’s mer’torious worth
Giv’n free by faith apart from works.
Thy grace abounds abundantly!
O sovereign Lord, please hear my plea:
One need have I, for Thou to be
The strength which binds my heart to Thee.

I on Thy promise shall depend –
And on this set my soul’s desire –
That Thou will love me to the end,
And guard me in temptation’s fire.
The good work Thou began in me,
Thy faithful hand will sure complete,
Will for me work, and in me too,
And guide me right, and bring me through.
No other rock have I beside;
If Thou could alter, I must fall:
I look to Thee to be supplied
With life, with will, with pow’r, with all.
I hold aloft my empty cup,
And with His grace, Christ fills it up.
Rich souls may glory in their store,
But Jesus will relieve the poor!
