The Warring Enemy

Words: Jesse Rey Quesada. Music: Bryan Jeffrey Lee & Jesse Rey Quesada.

The depths of my rebellious heart,

Lord, You alone can know.

Born into sin’s cruel slavery,

Without God, without hope.

Its sway held me, unyielding ‘til

Your power broke its grip,

And gave to me sweet vict’ry in

Your Spirit’s fellowship.

Though now redeemed, alas! I see

Sin presently indwells –

Opposing my desire, it strives

Against Your holy will.

The bondage of its presence wars

To steal my peace and rest.

Wretch that I am, who’ll set me free

From this body of death?

Praise be to Jesus Christ, my Lord,

In whom the pow’r resides

To slay the warring enemy –

Of lust, deceit, and pride.

His grace subdued that spring from which

Sin poured forth in my heart;

Now by Your grace, Lord, sanctify

My soul in every part.

How eagerly I've waited for

The day You shall appear,

And change, unto Your glorious form,

This humble frame I bear.

Disease and pain shall be annulled,

Yet greater still this thought:

That sin shall wage its war no more –

Its mem’ry come to naught!
